The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries reported on Monday that as of mid-December, Prey Veng province’s rice exports to Vietnam had reached 2.94 million tonnes, worth more than $836.67 million.
“This represents a 54.2 percent increase from the 75,000 hectares of cultivated area, which is higher than last year’s figure of only 23,544 hectares,” Mr. Ouk Samnang, head of the Prey Veng Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, told reporters at the “Dry Season Rice Production 2024-2025” program.
Mr. Samnang said that Prey Veng province is favorable for agriculture, including rice and other crops. “From January 1 to December 14, the volume of rice exports to Vietnam increased to 2,941,420 tonnes, earning a total of $836,673,831.”
He noted that the average wet rice price is 1,040 riel per kilogram for the International Rice Standard (IR), while the Oryza Mekongensis (OM) standard is 1,030 riel per kilogram.
The head of the department emphasized that in almost all districts and cities in Prey Veng province, farmers can plant rice two to three times a year, achieving relatively high yields.
Mr. Samnang noted that rice is mainly exported to Vietnam through two main border crossings: Banteay Chakrei International Gate in Preah Sdach District and Koh Roka International Gate in Peam Chor District, Prey Veng Province.
He continued to inform about the production of horticultural and industrial crops during the dry season, including white corn, watermelon and various peppers, which were achieved on a total area of 862 hectares, equivalent to 109.1 percent of the cultivated area of 790 hectares.
Industrial crops such as red corn, soybeans, peanuts, sesame, sugarcane, cassava and lotus were achieved on a total area of 2,086 hectares, equivalent to 40.8 percent of the cultivated area of 5,055 hectares.
The head of the department stated that from January 1 to December 14, the total quantity of fresh mangoes exported to Vietnam increased to 133,760 tons, with an average price of 714 riels per kilogram, with exports earning a total revenue of $21,360,122.
