Local tomato farmers are appealing to the public to support their tomatoes because they are almost full, but there is little market.
Mr. Kea Kakula, a cherry tomato farmer who grows about half a hectare (two rai) of tomatoes in O Neang village, Takram commune, Banan district, Battambang province, said that this is his first time growing tomatoes and has produced many tons, but there is not much market to sell them.
He said that due to the lack of market, he only sells 50 to 60 kilograms per day to customers at Phu Puy market, which costs only one thousand riel per kilogram. In the past, he used to grow cucumbers every year, but seeing that cherry tomatoes are very expensive, he also tried growing tomatoes once, and the cultivation was successful and the yield exceeded expectations. Even though the price is one thousand riel per kilogram, if there is a market for him to harvest tomatoes and sell them in tons, he will be able to make a reasonable profit without any loss.
Farmers say that without buyers, tons of tomatoes will be left to ripen without knowing what to do with them.
