Cassava production in Preah Vihear province has increased by 680,040 tons thanks to support from the Ministry of Commerce and various workshops with farms. Cassava plantations in Preah Vihear province cover an area of 34,002 hectares.
Mr. Muth Phisitna, Deputy Governor of Preah Vihear province, said on Tuesday while chairing the “Second Regional Consultation Workshop to Monitor Progress and Challenges in Implementing the National Cassava Policy in 2019” with Mr. Reach Ra, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Commerce. 2020-2025, saying that such high yields are a positive sign.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Reach Ra thanked those who attended the meeting. The Ministry of Commerce co-organized the workshop with the Preah Vihear Provincial Administration and the Preah Vihear Provincial Department of Commerce, with the participation of officials from the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, along with representatives of the cassava community and traders from Siem Reap and Stung Treng provinces. Mr. Reach Ra informed the participants about the importance of cassava policy, roles and responsibilities under the jurisdiction of ministries, relevant institutions and sub-national administrations. He said that the participation of all stakeholders is necessary to achieve the government’s vision and objectives over the next five years.

A press release from the Ministry of Commerce said that the workshop also discussed challenges and new ideas for production, processing and export.
At the seminar, officials from the Ministry of Commerce also made a presentation on the ‘National Cassava Policy 2020-2025’, which was approved by the Council of Ministers at a plenary meeting on August 14, 2020, and endorsed by former Prime Minister Hun Sen in September 2020. The policy was prepared and published by the General Department of Trade Promotion of the Ministry of Commerce, which is supported by the United Nations Development Programme. (UNDP).
